Life Care Management Intensive

This intensive course is led by the authors of “The Life Care Management Handbook.” The instructors provide instruction to help others start, grow, and manage a successful practice.  The courses provide a framework for being able to navigate difficult topics and provide value to the clients served, including older adults, the disabled and those with chronic health conditions. Life Care Management Intensive Courses

Class 1: The Field of Life Care Management

In the course you will learn about the history of life care management as well as the typical background of professionals working in this area of practice. You will learn about the demand and opportunities of this growing field and how the professional care manager can offer solutions for some of healthcare’s biggest challenges. We will review the role of the life care manager and the typical situations in which life care managers may be involved.

Class 2: Learn Create Manage

In this course, you will learn about a consistent approach to help improve efficiency while also fine-tuning the process you use on a regular basis. You will learn a method called “Learn-Create-Manage,” which helps simplify a complex process and provide direction so you can feel confident and offer tremendous value to those you serve. You will learn about the comprehensive assessment and the key areas of focus. You will learn how to create a plan of care, focusing on the areas of concern, barriers, goal setting, and making recommendations. We will review the cost of care and the how to assist in individuals and families by having a greater level of understanding and preparedness.

Class 3: Aging, Medical Conditions and Co-Morbidities

In this course, you will learn about normal aging and the importance of educating clients on what to expect and how health conditions may aggravate normal aging-related changes. By differentiating normal aging from the disease process, the life care manager can more easily identify areas of concern and address those concerns to help clients obtain optimal wellness You will learn about the most common health conditions and the role of the life care manager.  You will learn about the top health condition of Alzheimer’s Disease and related Dementias, which many life care managers may be involved with, and the importance of early awareness and detection.   

Class 4: Resources, Community & Collaboration

In this course, you will learn about concepts and theories around individual engagement and family involvement. You will review the various learning styles and understand how to make positive changes that will help clients reach their goals. We will discuss local and national resources and how to get connected to those resources.  Lastly, you will learn about National guidelines on aging and disability, becoming familiar with the programs and laws which help to serve and protect older adults and the disabled.  

Class 5: Legal & Ethical Considerations

In this course, you will learn about the typical situations and processes for helping clients prepare their legal documents and plan for their wishes and needs. We will review the most common mechanisms for protecting not only assets but also the way to ensure clients have some control over their healthcare, regardless of decision-making capacity. This course will also review the laws and regulations surrounding protected health information and how it relates to the life care manager. The lesson brings in an expert to help provide rich content in this area. Lastly, we will review the court-appointed roles for helping vulnerable adults who lack the executive function to make a decision in their best interest. This includes guardianship and conservator arrangements as well as a review of what it means to provide supported decision-making.

Class 6: Paying for Care

In this course, we will review the various mechanisms for paying for care. You will review the most common payer sources encountered by life care managers, including Veteran benefits and the public benefits of Medicare and Medicaid. The eligibility standards and special considerations will be reviewed, along with special benefits, and where to find resources to help your client navigate paying for care.

Class 7: Putting It All Together

In this class, we will bring together the information shared in this course and how to get started working as a life care manager.

Business Intensive

In this course you will learn the key steps necessary to create your business, including how to take care of some of the formalities. This includes naming your business, registering your business in the state where you are to provide services, setting up a presence for others to find you, and resources to refer to for development. You will also learn about business culture and leadership, which involves trying to gain perspective on your core values and how to align with your true intentions.
